Scorpio is one of two signs ruled by Mars. While Aries is a cardinal Fire sign, Scorpio is fixed Water. Aries is fast and assertive, Scorpio is slower and more defensive. This gives you some basic clues about the locations associated with these signs.
- Aries places are near heat and fire.
- Scorpio places are near water or moisture, especially when that water is muddy or stagnant.

In contrast, the Water signs of Cancer (cardinal) and Pisces (mutable) are more likely to represent places where liquid is fresh and moving, like ponds and rivers, oceans and springs.
All the Water signs can also indicate the north direction.
Other Scorpio places include drainage sites, like gutters or canals, and places where moisture causes decomposition and decay. Examples include ruins, compost piles, locations of moisture, mold and mildew.
In and around the home, Scorpio spots are the kitchen & bathroom, essentially anywhere where there is plumbing or drainage.
William Lilly attributes Scorpio to dark or secret places in horary astrology. This correlates with medical astrology, linking Scorpio to the “private parts” of the body. Scorpio rules the sacral plexus, pelvic and genital area, and the process of elimination. That includes body parts like the lower colon, rectum, anus, bladder, urethra, etc.
New Orleans, with constant humidity and below sea-level elevation, strikes me as a Scorpionic place. While some people complain about the humidity here, I find it refreshing—especially after spending time in a dry climate with cold air and heaters running.
